What to Do on a Full Moon: A Simple Practice for Receiving
What to do on a full moon: a ten-minute practice to look back at what arrived since the new moon, say thank you and make room. Plus the next dates.
If you're wondering what to do on a full moon, the short answer is to look back. The new moon two weeks earlier was for naming what you're calling in. The full moon is for noticing what has arrived since, and letting yourself take it in.
That's a different job from most full moon rituals you'll read about, and a simpler one. Here's what a full moon is, a ten-minute practice for it, and the dates for the next three.
What a full moon is
At a full moon, the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, so the whole face we see is lit. It rises around sunset and stays up all night. It's the brightest the sky gets after dark.
In Auriana's reading, that brightness is landing time. Whatever you planted in the dark of the new moon has had two weeks to move. Some of it has arrived. Now there's enough light to see it.
When to do it
The full moon itself is a single moment, but you don't need to catch the minute. The night of the full moon and the night either side all work. Choose the one where you'll have ten quiet minutes.
A full moon practice in five steps
- Look back two weeks. Write down everything good that has turned up since the new moon. Money, a kind word, an idea, a good night's sleep, a friend who called. Don't sort it. Just list it.
- Find the one that connects. If you set an intention at the new moon, look for the item on your list that belongs to it. It's often smaller than you expected, and it often came from a direction you weren't watching.
- Say thank you out loud. For that one, or for the whole list. Saying it is how you take it in, and not just count it.
- Name what's out of balance. One thing in your life that's taking more than it gives right now. You don't have to fix it tonight. Naming it is enough.
- Go and look at the Moon. If the sky is clear, step outside for a minute. If it isn't, the window will do. You've spent ten minutes on what you've been given. Let that be the last thing you do today.
If you'd like somewhere to keep the list, the Abundance Tracker in Auriana is made for exactly this, and it's free.
Three lines to keep
Say these out loud, or write them where you'll see them this week:
I see what has arrived, and I let it in.
I receive as easily as I give.
There is more on its way.
Why receiving gets its own night
Most of us are good at wanting and bad at receiving. We ask for something, it turns up in a small or sideways form, and we're already on to the next thing we want. The good that arrived never gets counted.
A full moon practice fixes that in the plainest way. Once a month, you stop and count. Marking what's good brings your awareness to it, and what you're aware of, you tend to find more of. Over a few months, the lists get longer. Nothing about the sky changed. You got better at seeing.
The next full moons
Dates are in UTC, so the date where you live may be a day either side. The moon calendar shows the times for your city.
- 26 October 2026: full moon in Taurus. It has its own page.
- 24 November 2026: full moon in Gemini
- 24 December 2026: full moon in Cancer
Each one carries the colour of its sign. Taurus is about comfort, money and what you can touch, so the October full moon is a good one for noticing what has arrived in your home and your bank account.
Questions people ask
Is a full moon a good time to set intentions?
The new moon is the better time for that, because it's the start of the cycle. Here's how to set a new moon intention. The full moon is for receiving. If you missed the new moon, though, there's nothing wrong with naming something now and looking back at the next full moon.
What if nothing has arrived?
Look smaller. The first arrivals are easy to explain away: a conversation, a bit of luck, a better mood. If the list really is short, that's worth knowing too. It usually means there's something to put down before there's room for more.
Do I need candles, crystals or anything special?
No. A pen and ten minutes. If something lovely on the table helps you take it seriously, use it.
How is this different from a gratitude list?
It's a gratitude list with a rhythm. Tying it to the full moon means you do it once a month whether you feel like it or not, and you can compare one moon with the next.
