How to Set New Moon Intentions: A Simple Practice

How to set new moon intentions in five minutes: when to do it, how to word an intention, examples for money, love and home, and what to do after.

Setting new moon intentions is one of the simplest practices there is, and one of the most useful. Once a month, at the new moon, you name what you're calling in. Then you spend the next two weeks noticing what arrives. That's it. No candles required (though they're lovely), no perfect wording, no special knowledge of astrology.

This guide covers when to set your intention, how to word it so it actually helps you, examples for different parts of life, and what to do in the days after.

What a new moon intention is

A new moon intention is a short, plain sentence about something you're calling into your life. It isn't a wish list, and it isn't a goal with a deadline. It's closer to a direction: a way of telling yourself what to watch for.

The new moon is the right moment for it because of what the sky is doing. At the new moon, the Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun, so its lit side faces away from us and the night is at its darkest. In Auriana's reading, that dark is seed time. What you name now is planted, even though nothing shows yet. As the Moon grows over the next two weeks, so does your attention to what's arriving.

When to set your intention

The new moon itself is a single moment, but you don't need to catch it to the minute. The day of the new moon and the two days after are all good. Some people like the evening of the new moon itself; others prefer the next morning, with a coffee and a fresh page.

You'll find the date and exact time of every new moon in the moon calendar, and the current phase on moon phase today. The next one is the new moon in Libra on 10 October 2026.

How to word a new moon intention

The way you word an intention changes how it feels to carry around. Four small rules help:

  1. Use the present tense. "Good work is finding me" feels different from "I want more work." The first is already moving; the second keeps it at a distance.
  2. Keep it to one sentence. If you need a paragraph, you're describing a plan. Pick the heart of it.
  3. Name the feeling, not just the thing. "A home that feels calm to walk into" leaves room for it to arrive in a way you didn't expect.
  4. Choose one realm. Money, love, home, friendship, creation, rest. One intention, one part of your life, makes it easy to notice when it shows up.

Read it back out loud. If it makes you want to roll your eyes, change a word until it doesn't.

New moon intention examples

A few to borrow, adapt, or use as a starting point:

  • Wealth: "Money finds me through work I enjoy." / "A new source of income is opening."
  • Love: "I'm with someone who meets me halfway." / "I let myself be chosen."
  • Home: "My home feels like a place I'm glad to come back to."
  • Friendship: "The right people are finding their way to me."
  • Creation: "The project I care about has momentum."
  • Joy: "I make room for one good thing every day."
  • Rest: "I rest before I'm empty, and it shows."

Notice that none of them say how. That's deliberate. The point of an intention is to recognise the arrival, not to script it.

What to do after you set it

This is the part most people skip, and it's where the practice comes alive.

Write it somewhere you'll see it

A note on your phone, a sticky note on the mirror, the first page of a notebook. You want to meet it again during the next two weeks.

Take one small step

Within three days, do one small thing in the direction of what you named, before you feel ready. Send the message. Book the chat. Clear the shelf. It tells the rest of your life you meant it.

Notice what arrives, and write it down

Arrivals are often small, and the habit is to explain them away: a kind email, an unexpected invitation, a better rate, a moment of ease. Write each one down. The Abundance Tracker in Auriana is made for exactly this: two taps to log what arrived and which realm it belongs to.

Check in at the full moon

About two weeks later comes the full moon: landing time. Look back at your intention and at everything you noticed. Say thank you for what came, and release anything you're done carrying, to make room for the next new moon.

Questions people ask

Do I have to write my intention by hand?

No. Writing by hand slows you down, which helps some people, but typing it into your phone works just as well. What matters is that you can find it again.

Can I set more than one new moon intention?

You can, but one is easier to notice. If you have several, choose the one that matters most this month, and save the others for the next new moon.

What if I'm late for the new moon?

Set your intention anyway. The two days after the new moon are still seed time, and an intention set a little late is far better than none.

Does the sign of the new moon matter?

It adds colour. Each new moon falls in a different sign, and the sign hints at where abundance moves most easily that month: through partnership in Libra, through the senses in Taurus, through conversation in Gemini. Each moon's page in the moon calendar explains what its sign brings.
